I went to a BMW dealership to just take a look at their cars. The salesman was a friend of mine and he said "Hey man, I'm gonna do the best deal ever. Come with me". While walking he added "I got a 221i for you." I'm like hum...never heard of this model...there again, BMWs number are confusing. We got outside and I saw this.
I'm like...what is this? A 2 series? He says yeah man and starts it. I hear a diesel engine idle. Then I asked him the price. He said "It's 30000 for you.". Right there I said "Wait! Isn't that a i8 that cost 130k???????" the friend said "Huh....yeah, yeah you're right". "Why 30k????I WANT IT NOW!" I replied. He said "hahaha wait right there buddy. There is no warranty."
Me: "Why no warranty??".
Him: "We replaced everything on this car, it's practicaly rebuilded. But because of that we had to remove the warranty even though it's brand new"
Me: "How much per month?".
Him: "500 flush."
Me: "Let me think about it *goes crazy in his head*
Right after that, I wrote you guys about it and wait for responses. /enddream
So what would you guys tell me to do if I ever had this situation popping up?

Stop making me think about this car. I don't want to risk liking it. Because batteries and electric motor. Because no V8, V10 or V12. And no Manuél. And not N/A.
Wait... I just realized I'm officially an old man now.

When I'm your age and rambling like that, I'm going to be committed.
But you should totally get an i8.

Haha you probably will. Because by that time you'll be considered an actual loony for not accepting new tech as gospel.
I am never, ever getting an i8. I would be petrified of what happens when the warranty expires. BMW would probably pull a Samsung and go "Well you see you need the the firmware for your car to drive by we no longer provide software updates for this model. Please trade it in for the 2017 version."

"But that's not fair"
"GET OUT OF HERE! WE ARE CALLING ZE SECURITY GUARDS"

Then what happens is they take your car away and you go home empty handed and very confused.

And they give you no money for it. All they give you is a big microwaved German soft pretzel

Then they kick you out. Whenever someone asks you what happens to your car, you just try to deflect so you don't have to admit that some German dudes just took it away from you.

I'm surprised there isn't something like that in CA. Because they have all the hipster startup businesses.

You're as crotchety as I am. Basically, nothing that BMW currently sells interests me. I do like the i8, but I wouldn't buy one. Choices are pretty limited these days if you're looking for 8, 10 or 12 cylinders, N/A and a stick. Sigh. I would give up the stick in the right circumstances though. 599 GTO? Yes please. Hell, even driving the FF was incredible without the stick. I think north of 600hp that gearbox makes sense.

Why doesn't everyone do what we did? Live closer to work people!! You don't need MPGs when you live right by your work. It makes your entire life better. Even if your car gave you 500 MPG it wouldn't make a long commute less torture. Sure you'd save money but you'd still be stuck in traffic and driving on the same road for an hour or more round trip. I love driving for fun but I hate boring and time consuming commutes.
Oh man don't bring up the GTO. It has the F1 box and that's a sore subject for me right now. My old man has an F430 and I never get to drive it because of reoccurring F1 problems. He *thinks* he has it fixed properly this time. It better be fixed because when Ferrari looked at it they basically admitted even they don't know how that witchcraft works so their way of fixing it would be to change everything other than the box itself at a cost of $22K.
Now I'm all paranoid. I need sell the bimmers before their transmissions explode. The 911 is the only safe car because it has the stick. I wish the E90 was stick now. I bought it before I moved and DCT made sense back then because I was stuck in traffic all the time...

Sucks about the 430 - hope it's fixed!
Your DCT is pretty bulletproof in the M. Doesn't have the same issue as the pumps in the old SMG and SMG II boxes. My friend had DCT in his 09 E90 with an Active stage 2 blower. Other than the DCT software provided by the tuner, he never had a single issue with the gearbox - and he was constantly at the drag strip!

Wow that's definitely reassuring!! That's awesome that your friend's DCT was able to handle the extra power from the blower.
I have read up on how DCTs are different and why that makes them better. It's just scary because DCTs have failed in some cars. I've been reading about how the DCT in the 458 can fail after heavy usage. Apparently the 458 Challenge race cars tend to go through their transmissions quicker than Ferrari had hoped they would!

well it's really just a question of relative expense. If you own the car long enough you're gonna need a clutch, regardless of 6MT or DCT. It's a wear item. Only difference is the size of your cash reserve =D

True! And I have no problem paying for clutches. I just don't want a transmission that will fail and need to replaced!
I read on FChat that there have been 458 owners who wrecked their DCTs while still under warranty, but Ferrari invalidated the warranty because the cars were tracked.

That's some BS! You mean ferrari doesn't expect its customers to track? I guess if you want track support you have to buy one of their XX cars, which like...awesome, obviously, but not street legal
Manuél Ferrari

07/04/2014 at 18:12 | 0 |
It is BS! I dunno if it's true because sometimes the people on forums don't know what they're talking about. But if it is true then it's total bullshit! BMW doesn't void warranties for track use, do they?
One thing that's possible that Ferrari would never admit to is undisclosed improvements to the 458's transmission. Maybe only the earlier cars had the issue and the later years are OK. They use the same GETRAG 7 speed DCT that Mercedes uses in the SLS. Mercedes calibrated the SLS to have much slower shifts than the 458 in order to have better reliability. But Mercedes later sped up the shifts in the SLS Black Series. Would Mercedes have done that if it put the transmission at risk of premature failure? Hard to know. Maybe GETRAG improved the transmission but neither them, Mercedes or Ferrari want to disclose it because it could lead to owners of early cars suing them if their transmissions fail.
